Which console to buy, what else you need to make it work, and how to avoid the common mistakes when buying on eBay.
For most UK buyers: a PAL console with its original controller and cables. It plays the UK versions of games, which are by far the easiest to find here. If you want a sharper picture on a modern TV, look at the HDMI options further down.

N64 games are region-locked. A PAL (UK and Europe) console is built for PAL games, and games from Japan (NTSC-J) or North America (NTSC-U/C) generally won't work on it without an adapter or a modified console.
A console on its own isn't enough. Here's what you need, and what to check on each.
The analog stick wears out over time. Ask for a close-up photo, or plan to replace it.
Find controllersExtra memory. Needed for games such as Zelda: Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark's main campaign.
Find Expansion PaksA memory card for games that save to it rather than to the cartridge.
Find memory cardsThe original N64 outputs a low-resolution signal, and many modern TVs make it look blurry or don't have the right inputs. Your options, from cheapest to most expensive:
A used PAL console with one controller and the cables it needs, plus one or two common games. Skip the extras until you know what you'll play.
Browse consolesA console bundle or a console plus a second controller, a Controller Pak and an Expansion Pak. This covers multiplayer and most popular games.
Browse bundlesA boxed console, a modern video solution, extra controllers and a library of original games.
Browse boxedPrices vary a lot between listings, so compare a few before buying, and check whether a game needs an Expansion Pak or Controller Pak.
Not directly in most cases. You'll need a cable your TV accepts, or an adapter or upscaler. See the modern TV section above.
Not without an adapter or a modified console. If you want the easiest path, buy PAL games for a PAL console.
Only for certain games. Check the game's listing or box, and buy one if you want to play those titles.
Mostly, if you check photos, feedback and returns, and stay alert to fakes. Pay through eBay so buyer protection applies.
Prices can rise and fall, so buy for the fun of playing rather than as a guaranteed investment.
